UK to Puerto Rico power adapters - do I need to bring a power adapter to Puerto Rico?
What adapter do I need for Puerto Rico?
You will need to bring a Type B power adapter to Puerto Rico if your plug won't fit in a Puerto Rican power outlet.
The type of power adapter, converter or charger that you'll need to bring when visiting Puerto Rico will all depend on the voltage and type of device that you're trying to use with a Puerto Rican power outlet. If you're not sure what voltage your device uses then please read the section about how can you tell if you have a single voltage or dual voltage device before going any further.
- If you're planning on travelling to Puerto Rico from the US all US appliances and devices should charge without a power converter or an adapter. One suggestion however is to bring a USB travel power adapter as it will allow you to charge more than one device using only one power charger.
- If your device is 120 volts or is dual voltage and your plug will fit in a Puerto Rican power outlet then it will work in Puerto Rico without needing a plug adapter.
- If your device can run on 120 volts or is dual voltage but the plug won't fit in a Puerto Rican power outlet you will need a suitable plug adapter for Puerto Rico such a Type B power adapter. A plug adapter for Puerto Rico (or power adapter) is designed to change the actual shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in Puerto Rico, but but is unable to convert the voltage from 120 volts to a different voltage.
- If your device doesn't run on 120 volts and isn't dual voltage then you will also need a power converter for Puerto Rico to convert the voltage from 120 volts to the correct voltage on your device. You'll still need to use a suitable plug adapter for Puerto Rico if your power converter doesn't include the correct Type B power adapter.
- If you simply need to bring one or more USB devices such as mobile phones or tablets then a USB travel power adapter will be ideal and it will work with any voltage, but ensure that you choose a USB travel adapter which includes a Type B power adapter otherwise you'll also need to pack a suitable plug adapter for Puerto Rico. [3] [AD]
- Excessive use of a phone during a vacation can put an extra drain on the battery, we suggest packing a portable power bank if you need to recharge your cellphone whilst travelling to an unfamiliar location.
Puerto Rico power adapters
Power adapters for Puerto Rico
If planning a vacation it's useful to know if you can use any common electronics when you arrive. By not knowing which power socket to expect you could pack the wrong power charger, leaving you having to purchase a potentially expensive adaptor when you're there. Complicated combinations of standards and voltages can all lead to confusion when planning to travel to a new country, especially if you've never been there before. With only a handful of different types of sockets used throughout the world this guide shows exactly what you'll need in advance to charge your electronics in Puerto Rico. This page has links to step-by-step instructions which shows exactly which power adapters you'll need to power your devices when you're visiting Puerto Rico by using their standard B or A type Puerto Rican 120 volt 60Hz power outlets, a majority of Puerto Ricans will use the Type B plug outlets. When travelling you'll discover that power adapters will vary regionally therefore please read the Wiki Connections global power adapters list where you'll find a full list of charging devices in different regions and countries.
What is the best power adapter for Puerto Rico?
The best power adapter for Puerto Rico is a Type B power adapter which is suitable for powering any 120 volt device or appliance. [3] [AD]
What is a power adapter?
Power adapters are small and cheap plastic adapters that allow a Puerto Rican power outlet to accept a power plug from an appliance from a foreign country. [5]
What does a power adapter for a Puerto Rican power outlet do?
A power adapter for a Puerto Rican power outlet allows a visitor from another country to use their own electrical appliances in Puerto Rico by adapting the shape of the power plug from one type to another.
Will a power adapter change the voltage in Puerto Rico?
No, a power adapter only adapts the shape of a plug to fit into a 120 volt Puerto Rican power outlet and is unable to convert the power to a different voltage. Should you wish to safely use any 220, 230 or 240 volt device you will also need a more expensive step up power converter for Puerto Rico.
Where to buy a power adapter for Puerto Rico in the UK
Puerto Rico to UK power adapters will most likely be available to buy in the UK from airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted, Luton, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Birmingham prior to departure, however the range of adapters might be limited to popular destinations. It is recommended to research the exact type of adapter required prior to shopping at the airport. Look in the travel accessories section of airport newsagents, electronic stores and pharmacists such as WH Smith, Dixons or Boots but expect to pay 50% more than regular prices.
It will be more convenient and cheaper to buy the correct power adapter in advance of your trip. UK high street electrical shops, newsagents and chemists such as Currys PC World, WH Smith or Boots normally typically only sell popular types of travel adapters covering a limited number of countries however for widest choice it is recommended to buy a power adapter online. In January 2019 we checked 2 high street branches of WH Smiths without seeing any power adapters available to purchase and 1 branch of Boots only had a pack of European adapters available.
Where to buy a power adapter in Puerto Rico
On arrival power adapters could be found in local electrical high street shops and drug stores, but always check the build quality first as safety standards might be different in a foreign country as this is important when dealing with electrical goods. Keep in mind that a shopping trip searching for power adapters in an unknown location might be impractical, especially as this needs to happen quickly before batteries run out.
Hotel receptions could have a power adapter for sale, hire or as a complimentary extra for guests; however, availability is normally limited and a hotel might not have the exact type required for your country. If in doubt, call ahead to the hotel first and request a reservation as it is unlikely that an adapter will be found in your room on arrival.
Electrical adapters for Puerto Rico
Travel Power Strips
Benefits of a travel power strip
- A travel power strip is capable of charging more than one appliance at once using just a single Puerto Rican power outlet.
- Certain models will convert voltage for low wattage devices. So therefore if the device isn't dual voltage it can still function in Puerto Rico when using a travel power strip. This makes them a lightweight and cheaper substitute for a dedicated voltage converter.
- Most models should feature multiple USB charging ports.
- Voltage from power grids in certain countries might fluctuate, a sudden surge in power might damage delicate electrical items. There are some models that have a surge protector, this will protect your device from being overloaded by unstable power grids.
- When you get back home it should still be useful.
Disadvantages of a travel power strip
- The power converter on a travel power strip doesn't support high wattage appliances such as curling irons and hair straighteners.
- Due to the weight of a travel power strip it might not be suitable for packing in hand luggage.
- A travel power strip could be excessive if you only bring a small number of appliances and devices to power. [6] [AD]
- Power strip models for sale in the UK only include type B, F, G and I plug adapters so you may need to use it along with an additional plug adapter to work in some countries.
Travel USB Wall Chargers
Benefits of a travel USB wall charger
- Perfect when you only have to charge USB devices, for example iPads, cell phones and Kindles.
- Instead of bringing lots of domestic power chargers travellers only need to bring a single charger.
- Supplied with swappable heads meaning they can be used in a large number of different locations. The interchangeable adapter heads are usually small and lightweight which makes them easy to fit into hand luggage.
- Offers a built in surge protector.
- When you get back to the UK it could still be functional.
- The interchangeable plugs will fit into Types A/B, E/F, G and I outlets so will work in Puerto Rico.
Disadvantages of a travel USB wall charger
Power Plug Adapters
Benefits of a power plug adapter
- Compact and lightweight.
- Cheapest option.
- Simple to operate.
- Using a Type B power adapter will work in Puerto Rico.
Disadvantages of a power plug adapter
- One adapter for each appliance - for every device or appliance you'll also need to use a separate power plug adapter.
- This only alters the actual shape of the plug to fit in a Type B Puerto Rican power outlet and doesn't alter the voltage used in Puerto Rico - if your appliance doesn't support a 120 volt power outlet and isn't dual voltage then you'll also need to bring a separate voltage converter.
- Accomodation in Puerto Rico might only have a single wall outlet available, so you will only be able to charge a single device at once.
- You'll also need to pack your separate domestic USB charger if you wish to charge any USB device.
- Should you plan on travelling to more than one country you might need to pack multiple power adapter types for other countries. [3] [AD]
Universal Travel Power Adapters
Benefits of a universal travel power adapter
- Useful for travelling to multiple countries. Typical universal travel adapters function in over 150 different countries.
- All in one design. Both lightweight and small.
- Some models will include multiple USB charging ports.
- Relatively straightforward operation.
- There are some models that have a surge protector, this will protect your device from being overloaded by unstable power grids in some countries.
- The pins retract so don't catch against other items in your luggage.
- When you return to the UK it could still be functional as a USB charger.
- Changes shape to Types A/B, E/F, G and I plugs so should fit in a Puerto Rican power outlet.
Disadvantages of a universal travel power adapter
- Cannot be used with a high power electrical appliance such as hair straighteners, clothes irons, kettles, vacuum cleaners or hair dryers.
- Pins, shutters and internal moving parts could be fragile on some models making them likely to fail when travelling.
- Can only provide power to a single appliance.
- Not completely universal; adapters might not cover certain countries with less common power outlet types.
- They lack a built in voltage converter meaning they're not suitable for electrical devices which don't support 120 volts. [8] [AD]
Plug Adapter Sets
Benefits of a plug adapter set
- A power adapter set typically works out more reasonable than buying individual power plug adapters.
- Ensures you are covered for every eventuality and not just a Puerto Rican power outlet.
- Perfect for anyone visiting different countries.
- Each set includes Type A, B, C, D, E/F, G, H, I, J, L, M and N adapters so should be suitable with a Puerto Rican power outlet.
Disadvantages of a plug adapter set
- Not flexible - prior to any trip you will need to choose which plug adapters to bring, if you don't know every country you'll be visiting you'll need to bring every plug adapter type along.
- Means lots of individual items to pack.
- Having only a single compatible power adapter working in Puerto Rico the remaining plug adapters will be useless.
- Not every plug adapter types are typically included with the set (and especially rarer adapters) - so ensure that your set has one which works with a Puerto Rican power outlet.
- Each adapter only modifies the shape of the plug to allow it to fit in a Puerto Rican power outlet but not the actual voltage. [9] [AD]
Voltage Converters
Benefits of a voltage converter
- A step up voltage converter can allow you to use your non-120 volt appliance with a Puerto Rican power outlet.
- Voltage converters have a built in surge protector that will protect your device from being overloaded.
Disadvantages of a voltage converter
- A power converter only changes the 120 volts in Puerto Rico and not the actual shape of the plug to fit into a Puerto Rican power outlet, so you will still need to use the right type of power adapter for Puerto Rico.
- The size and weight of voltage converters makes them impractical for carry-on luggage.
- A converter won't be of any use when returning to the UK.
- It is often cheaper to buy a dual voltage travel appliance than to purchase a much more expensive power converter just in order to bring your existing single voltage appliance in an incompatible country.
- When you travel to Puerto Rico from the UK then you will need one as the voltage from a Puerto Rican power outlet is 120 volts. [10] [AD]

Puerto Rico power outlets and plug sockets
What plug sockets are used in Puerto Rico?
There are two types of power supply used in Puerto Rico, types B and A with the primary power supply being type B:
- Plug Type A - You can identify the power socket by two slots adjacent to each other for live and neutral blades.
- Plug Type B - This plug outlet, technically called a type B power outlet, can be recognised by 2 thin slots next to each other for live and neutral blades with a single hole below for the slightly long grounded pin. [3] [AD]
What is the electrical frequency used in Puerto Rico?
The frequency used in a Puerto Rican power outlet is 60Hz. [11]
How do I use a 220 volt appliance in Puerto Rico?
A step up power converter will allow you to use a 220 volt appliance in Puerto Rico.
Is an electric power outlet for the Caribbean the same as a power outlet for Puerto Rico?
Different countries throughout The Caribbean use different standards of voltages and power outlet types, a plug that can be used in Puerto Rico might not work or fit in an electric outlet on another island. If you intend on visiting more than one island in The Caribbean you can either use a multiple power adapter travel set containing all types of power adapters, or a more convenient international travel plug adapter as both these options ensure you're covered for most different power outlet types that you may encounter in each country.
Because each island in The Caribbean uses different standards of voltages and power outlet types you might find a plug which is used in Puerto Rico might not operate with an electrical outlet on another island. When preparing to travel check these pages for more guides on what you can expect for every island in the Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Dominica, Grenada, Grenadines, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Nevis, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Tobago, Trinidad and US Virgin Islands. Do I need a portable charger for Puerto Rico?
Even though power cuts aren't regular and electricity is available throughout the country, visitors should still bring a portable charger to recharge mobiles.
- During a trip increased reliance on mobile phones for taking pictures, storing itineraries, social network sharing, sat nav and playing games will syphon off power before the end of the day. A flat cell phone battery can potentially leave you stranded without enough power to make an emergency call or being able to use a satellite navigation app to find your way back to accommodation.
- Using a portable power bank lowers that risk as it means you can keep your mobile phone fully powered on the move.
- We recommend using at least a 10,000mAh power bank which can supply enough electricity to power around three full charges while a 20,000mAh power bank should keep an average mobile phone charged for almost seven days depending on the usage and model of the phone. A mAh value shows the capacity of the battery and gives an indication of how many charge cycles the power bank is capable of.
- As long as your laptop has a USB-C charging port then a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) which supplies at least 20Wh can be used to recharge the laptop in Puerto Rico.
- Be aware that some airlines won't allow you take power banks on an aircraft with more than 100Wh of power and must not be kept in the hold.
- Consumer power banks aren't strong enough for use with high powered items, but a rechargeable hair dryer or rechargeable cordless flat iron are designed for travelling. [4] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [AD]
Does a solar powered charger work in Puerto Rico?
The sunlight in Puerto Rico should be suitable enough to charge solar power bank dependably, but will need to be left in strong sunlight to provide enough energy for a single charge. It might prove inconvenient to constantly unpack a solar power bank and wait whilst it recharges in sunny spells.
- Instead, the much larger durable cells found on a solar backpack will give the bag the ability to generate more electricity within a faster period of time and should generate some charge during overcast weather, meaning they should perform well in Puerto Rico.
- A device that is plugged directly into the USB port of a solar backpack should trickle charge the power during sunny periods in Puerto Rico, but this might be inconvenient to have it continually connected in the bag should it be used constantly. A regular power bank plugged into a solar backpack can be constantly powered up during sunlight, afterwards the phone can be powered up from the power bank without daylight.
- Even though the climate in Puerto Rico is suitable for solar, a bag should ideally have a solar cell efficiency of at least 22%, can generate at least 6 watts of power and includes a compatible power bank of 10,000mAH or greater. The durable and flexible solar panels used in solar powered bags have been designed to endure bending and scratching, unlike normal rigid solar panels. Solar bags are found in laptop messenger, rucksack and backpack styles which makes them ideal for work, domestic and travel use. [4] [18] [19] [AD]

Puerto Rico chargers
What is a USB travel power charger?
A USB travel charger is a dual voltage charger with interchangeable plugs and multiple USB ports, suitable for charging multiple USB powered devices when travelling abroad.
What USB charger do I need for Puerto Rico?
If you are travelling to multiple countries and bringing along more than one device then the best travel charger for Puerto Rico to buy is a multiple USB adapter which includes swappable plugs such as a 4 port USB travel charger. Puerto Ricans use two different types of power outlets (types B and A) and using a travel adapter like this will ensure that you are covered for type A.
Because these types of chargers are supplied with interchangeable plugs and handle from 100 to 240 volts will mean you can travel to multiple countries around the world just by switching the supplied plugs over. If your type of device is compatible with Fast Charge (please note not all USB devices will) then you will benefit from faster charging times with one of these types of travel chargers, plus additional support for more power demanding devices like tablets. Unlike other travel chargers this will allow you to charge more than one device simultaneously without needing to buy individual power adapters for your Puerto Rican trip or using up additional power sockets. Because you are only needing a single USB travel charger will help keep the overall weight down, making it ideal to fold up and store in hand baggage and convenient for recharging your devices at an airport or on the flight. Due to their space saving flexibility these types of power adapters can be used at home not just abroad so when you’re not on holiday they can be used under your bedside table charging multiple tablets, phones and e-readers without using up an additional wall outlet.
If you travel often we suggest searching for this type of flexible travel charger online; the travel charger illustrated below is the universal multi-device USB wall charger which has been successfully tested for powering multiple USB devices in numerous different countries around the world with perfect reliably. [7] [AD]
Why use a travel USB charger for Puerto Rico?
- Normal travel USB chargers include multiple USB charger ports, this means that you only need to bring a single charger to charge multiple devices. It helps reduce the size of your luggage by only needing to bring a single USB wall charger instead of bringing several individual USB chargers along.
- All travel USB chargers will include interchangeable plug heads for various regions. This is suitable if travelling to other countries across North America which will probably use different outlets to Puerto Rico.
- A good USB charger is lightweight, compact and rugged; ideal for the rigors of travel rather than risking bringing along a domestic charger which could be hard to repair or replace in Puerto Rico.
- USB chargers can accept the 120 volts used in Puerto Rico power outlets plus other voltage standards across the world.
- It is possible that hotel bedrooms in Puerto Rico only have a single power outlet, by using a travel charger with multiple USB ports allows you to share out the single wall outlet with family or other traveler instead of having to wait to recharge one device at a time.
- Because of their versatile nature they take the uncertainty out of travelling to any unknown destination as they are guaranteed to work almost anywhere on the planet.
- Power outlets found in airports are often scant and demand for charging multiple cell phones and tablets during departure can be high, therefore a USB charger with multiple ports and the capability to charge quickly is perfect.
- Some countries power grids are unstable, a good travel USB charger allows for unexpected fluctuations and prevents damage to any devices attached to it. Trying to repair an overloaded cell phone in Puerto Rico could prove difficult and expensive.
- Premium USB chargers will also feature a power outlet strip to use low wattage devices such as laptops, but be aware these will be unsuitable for high wattage domestic such as hair dryers or clothes irons. Read our guide on using travel appliances in Puerto Rico for helpful advice and guidelines on the most suitable power adapter to use with a Puerto Rican power outlet for high powered appliances.
- Certain mobile phones and tablets might require more than the standard 500 mA (milliamps) supplied by a standard 5 volt USB adapter to charge or provide fast charge. Ensure that the USB power adapter can support fast charging incase any of your devices require extra power.
- Travel USB chargers can still be useful when returning home by recharging multiple cellphones every day using only one power outlet. [7] [AD]

Power converters for Puerto Rico
What does a power converter for Puerto Rico do?
Power converters allow travellers to use a 220, 230 or 240 volt electrical device with a 120 volt Puerto Rican power outlet.
Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.
What is the difference between a power converter and a power adapter?
A heavy and bulky power converter will convert a 120 volt Puerto Rican power outlet to work with a non-120 volt device, whereas a smaller and more lightweight power adapter (or plug adapter) changes the shape of the plug on your device to slot into a power outlet found in Puerto Rico. [20] [AD]
Do I need a power converter for Puerto Rico?
If you are travelling to Puerto Rico from a different region please check that the device can accept a 120 volt power supply.
- You need a step up power converter if you are visiting Puerto Rico from a country that uses 220-240 volts and your device or appliance is incompatible with 120 volts. Read the WikiConnections world power outlets page to discover the voltage your country uses.
- You shouldn't need a power converter if you already own either a single voltage appliance that works with 120 volts or one that supports dual voltage.
- Electrical devices which originate from a different country which use a higher voltage such as 230 volts and used in a 120 volt power outlet may take longer to charge or won't power up. If your device slowly recharges or doesn't turn on when travelling to Puerto Rico from a different country then check that it can be used with a 120 volt Puerto Rican power outlet otherwise you will need a step up power converter.
- You shouldn't need a converter if you are attempting to power a smaller electrical device such as a laptop as these are normally designed for international use and dual voltage, however please always check the device for dual voltage support first.
- For powering appliances which draw more power or generate heat (such as clothes irons or hair dryers) then you will need to use a much larger higher wattage heavy duty power converter.
- It could be more cost effective to use a smaller lightweight dual voltage travel appliance than trying to carry a much heavier power converter to Puerto Rico just to use your existing domestic appliance.
- Read these travel guides on travelling with clothes irons, curling irons, flat irons and blow dryers in Puerto Rican power outlets which includes guides for affordable dual voltage alternatives. [10] [21] [AD]
What converter do I need for Puerto Rico?
If you wish to use any 220-240 volt appliance in Puerto Rico you need to use a step up power converter. [10] [AD]
What is the difference between a power transformer and a converter?
Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:
- Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
- Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
- Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
- Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
- Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
- Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
- Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.
How to convert 120 volts to 220 volts
- Use a step up power converter to allow you to use 220, 230 and 240 volt appliances with a 120 volt Puerto Rican power outlet.
- If the power converter doesn't include the correct shaped plug then it will also be necessary to plug in the power cord from the power converter into a power adapter for Puerto Rico before plugging that into a Puerto Rican power outlet.
- Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage from 220-240v.
- Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 220-240 volt appliance can now be used with a 120 volt Puerto Rican power outlet. [10] [AD]
What voltage does Puerto Rico use?
Puerto Rico uses 120 volts in their power outlets. [2]
How to tell the voltage of my device
The easiest way to see if your appliance is either dual or single voltage is to look for either a sticker or numbers printed on the power adapter, or on the unit itself, normally near to where the power cord sits. This location will depend on the make or model of your appliance but should also state on the box or in the instruction manual.
- Single voltage devices could say a specific number - such as 240V.
- Single voltage devices might also have a small voltage range (around 20 volts) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 220-240V.
- Dual voltage devices will say a larger voltage range separated with a slash - such as 100/240V.
Substantiations
See the power adapter substantions section for more information on how we compared travel adapters.
What type of adapter do you need for Puerto Rico?
Which type of adapter will you need to bring to Puerto Rico?
The power converter or plug adapter that is suitable for Puerto Rico depends on your requirements, so prior choosing which adapter to use we suggest using the following checklist:
How many devices will you be packing for Puerto Rico?
- List how many devices and applicances you intended on bringing to Puerto Rico (such as laptops, cell phones, tablets, eReaders, curling irons and hair straighteners).
- Remember to take into account that you might own more devices at a later date. Do you intend on purchasing a new laptop computer next year?
- There are a growing number of smaller rechargeable devices such as electric shavers that utilise USB for their power charging source. The if you buy a new device it might need a USB adapter so please check that your travel adapter has enough spare ports to power these additional items as well.
- Are you also bringing a partner to Puerto Rico that might need to recharge their devices as well?
What types of electrical devices do you want to use with a Puerto Rican power outlet?
- There are three types of electrical devices:
- Low wattage electronic devices that can be plugged into an electrical outlet - for example a laptop.
- High wattage appliances which plug into a power outlet - for example curling irons and hair straighteners.
- USB electrical devices that plug into a USB port - for example cellphones or Kindles.
- When you only want to take just USB powered devices to Puerto Rico you'll find that a travel USB wall charger is ideal because you'll only have to bring one charger rather than packing multiple domestic chargers.
- A travel power strip is made for powering and converting voltage for many low wattage devices, but won't work with high wattage appliances (such as hair irons) that need voltage conversion and could potentially overload it.
Are you only charging USB devices in Puerto Rico?
- Should you only intend on bringing USB powered devices such as mobile phones for Puerto Rico then it is recommended to just pack a travel USB wall charger.
- If you only use a simple power plug adapter in Puerto Rico you will still need to pack the USB charger that came with your device as well. [7] [AD]
Do your devices only work with 120 volt power outlets?
- Puerto Rico uses 120 volts, so if you travel from a country which isn't 120 volts and you're not using a dual voltage appliance (how you can tell) then you will either need to bring a bulky voltage converter or a power strip with a built in voltage converter.
- It might be more expensive to buy a power converter rather than bringing a dedicated dual voltage travel appliance (such as a dual voltage hair dryer, clothes iron, curling iron or hair straighteners for Puerto Rico) which is robustly designed for travel and often includes plug adapters.
Is Puerto Rico the only place you'll be visiting?
- Simple plug adapters will only typically operate in the one country which they are designed for, therefore if you plan on visiting more than just one country you may need to pack additional plug adapters which can add to the number of adapters you have to carry.
- Alternatively, universal travel adapters and travel USB wall chargers are made for travelling to multiple countries becuase of their interchangeable heads.
How many wall outlets are available when you get to Puerto Rico?
- A hotel in Puerto Rico might only offer a single power outlet. This could be a problem if recharging multiple electronic items such as tablets, cell phones or cameras overnight as you can only recharge one device at a time after each device has finished recharging.
- Should you need to recharge multiple devices at the same time then look to packing a travel USB wall charger or a travel power strip which are capable of powering multiple USB ports and power outlets. [6] [AD]
Are you planning on visiting anywhere abroad in the future?
- A USB charger with interchangeable heads or versatile universal travel adapter can both be reused for other trips in the future to other countries as well as Puerto Rico.
What is your budget?
- A basic power adapter will charge one device in only a single location (provided that is compatible with 120 volts or it is dual voltage), but investing in a little more will allow you to charge multiple devices at once and you can use them in various countries.
Will you always have reliable access to power?
- The power in Puerto Rico is stable but if you plan to go to other countries you may need a power adapter which will protect your devices. Electricty might sporadically fluctuate in some other regions which might possibly cause damage to your devices, it is advisable to use a power adapter which offers surge protection built in such as a travel power strip.
- Using a portable power bank or a solar backpack will prepare you for any power cuts and countries with limited electricity. [4] [4] [18] [AD]
Do you still need use your charger when returning to the UK?
- Some models of travel power strips and travel USB wall chargers might still be useful when you return back to the UK (if they also include a domestic plug).
Are you planning to travel with hand luggage?
- Due to the increased weight and size most models of power converters and travel power strips can be too heavy for carry-on luggage, we recommend using either a USB wall charger or a smaller universal travel power adapter instead. [8] [AD]
Are you flying long haul to get to Puerto Rico?
- If you are taking a long journey to get to Puerto Rico it's worth considering a convenient charger which is ideal for airports that can be used with different power outlet types, one that can be packed in hand luggage and can quickly top up tablets and phones right prior to an extensive journey.
- Because not all airports and planes have power outlets available for travellers please consider bringing a battery portable power bank for recharging on the move. When arriving you could need to rely on your cell phone for making a telephone call, using sat nav to find your accomodation or recalling itineraries - therefore please ensure that your phone has enough power remaining.
