Universal Travel Power Adapters

A universal travel adapter

Universal Travel Power Adapters

Benefits of a universal travel power adapter

  • Typical universal travel adapters will function in around 150 different countries.
  • All-in-one design which is small and lightweight.
  • There are some models which include multiple USB charging ports built in.
  • Easy to use.
  • Some models also have a surge protector built in, this will prevent your electronics from being overloaded by an unstable power grid in some countries.
  • The retracting pins don't get caught against other items in baggage.
  • The universal travel power adapter can potentially be functional domestically as a USB charger.
  • Changes shape to Types A/B, E/F, G and I plugs so should work with a Manx power outlet.

Disadvantages of a universal travel power adapter

  • A universal adapter cannot be used with high power appliances such as hair straighteners, kettles, vacuum cleaners, curling irons or hair dryers.
  • The internal moving parts such as shutters and pins could be fragile on some universal travel adapters which might make them likely to possibily fail.
  • Universal adapters only provide power to one plug.
  • Might not be totally universal; some adapters might not work in some countries with less common outlet types.
  • They don't have a power converter meaning they aren't suitable for non-240 volt appliances in The Isle of Man. [12] [AD]

  • Most modern travel power strips will include multiple USB ports.
  • Voltage from power outlets in certain areas could be tempremental, a surge in power can damage delicate electronics. There are some models which include a surge protector to protect your device from being overpowered.
  • A power strip can potentially still be of use when you return to the UK as a power strip.

Disadvantages of a travel power strip

  • The conversion on travel power strips doesn't convert high wattage appliances such as hair dryers and clothes irons.
  • Due to the size of a power strip it might be too bulky for hand luggage.
  • Travel power strips could be considered excessive if you only bring a small number of devices to power. [13] [AD]
  • Power strip models for sale in the UK only include type B, F, G and I plug adapters so you may need to use it along with an additional plug adapter to work in some countries.

Disadvantages of a plug adapter set

  • Involves planning - you will need to decide which plug adapters to bring in advance, or alternatively bring each plug adapter type.
  • Means lots of individual adapters to bring with you.
  • Having just a single working plug adapter the remaining power adapters will be useless.
  • Not all plug adapter types are typically included in the set (and especially rarer ones) - so ensure that your set includes one which is compatible with a Manx power outlet.
  • A plug adapter only alters the shape of the plug but doesn't alter the actual voltage. [14] [AD]
Voltage Converters

A voltage converter has surge protection

Voltage Converters

Those travelling from the UK shouldn't need a converter as the voltage in The Isle of Man is 240 volts.

Benefits of a voltage converter

Disadvantages of a voltage converter

  • It will only change the 240 volts in The Isle of Man and not the shape of the plug to slot into a Manx power outlet, therefore you will still be required to bring a suitable power adapter.
  • The normal size of most models makes them unsuitable for packing in hand luggage.
  • Redundant when get back home.
  • It is usually less expensive to bring a dual voltage travel appliance than to purchase a more expensive power converter simply in order to power your existing single voltage appliance in an incompatible location.

Do I need a power bank for The Isle of Man?

A portable charger

Do I need a power bank for The Isle of Man?

It is always advised to bring a power bank to recharge mobiles whilst on a trip.

  • For many being offline can cause mild stress, especially when being relied upon in an unknown location. During a trip to The Isle of Man increased reliance on smart phones for taking photographs, storing itineraries, social networks, GPS and streaming videos could syphon off power excessively. A flat mobile phone battery can possibly leave you stranded without sufficient power to make an emergency call or being able to use a sat nav app to get directions to your accommodation. By packing a portable charger lowers the risk as it means you can keep your cell phone powered on the go.
  • A typical 10,000mAh portable charger can store enough energy to cover over three full days of mobile phone use while a 20,000mAh power bank should keep a typical mobile phone powered for up to a week depending on the model of phone and usage.
  • If you want to charge your laptop with a power bank in The Isle of Man and it it supports USB-C charging then use a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) which supplies 20 Wh or more.
  • Be aware that some airlines prohibit portable chargers on an aircraft that supply 100 Wh of power or more and must be kept in carry-on luggage only.
  • Consumer portable chargers won't work with high powered items that generate heat, although a rechargeable hair dryer or rechargeable cordless flat iron are designed for travelling.    [10] [10] [18] [19] [20] [21] [AD]
Will a solar charger work in The Isle of Man?

A solar backpack recharging in the sun

Will a solar charger work in The Isle of Man?

The sunshine in The Isle of Man can be suitable conditions for a solar power bank, however it is likely to take time to charge. Due to their compact surface area a solar power bank will need to be kept in powerful daylight for a long period of time to provide enough power for a single charge cycle, which might prove inconvenient to repeatedly unpack a solar power bank and wait for it to recharge in sunny spells.

  • The larger durable solar cells used on a solar backpack give the bag the ability to generate more power within a faster period of time, and could still generate some power when overcast.
  • Phones which are directly plugged into the USB charging port of a solar backpack will trickle charge the battery during sunny periods in The Isle of Man, however this could prove inconvenient to have a phone continually connected to the bag if it is to be needed constantly. A backback with solar cells is constantly exposed to sunlight so could be charging a power bank during the day, unlike a small solar power bank that requires unpacking and facing the sunlight.
  • A bag which is suitable for The Isle of Man should have a solar cell efficiency of at least 22%, be able to generate at least 6 watts of energy and includes a power bank of 10,000mAH or stronger.
  • They come in backpack, messenger and rucksack styles which makes them perfect for domestic, work and travel. Unlike regular firm solar panels, the flexible and durable solar cells used in solar powered bags have been built to survive bending and scratches.  [10] [22] [23] [AD]

What is a USB travel power charger?

A USB travel charger is a dual voltage charger with interchangeable plugs and multiple USB ports, suitable for charging multiple USB powered devices when travelling abroad.

What USB charger do I need for The Isle of Man?

If travelling to multiple countries the best international travel power adapter for The Isle of Man to buy is a multiple USB port charger which includes swappable plugs like a 4 port USB travel charger. Because these types of chargers come with interchangeable plugs and can handle from 100 - 240 volts it makes them ideal for multiple countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa just by changing the supplied heads. If your device is compatible with Fast Charge (note that not all USB devices do) then you will benefit from much quicker charging times with one of these travel adapters, along with additional compatibility with certain power demanding devices. Having a 4 port charger means you can charge more than one device at the same time without needing to bring multiple power chargers or occupying additional power outlets. Only bringing a single travel charger will keep the overall size and weight down, making it ideal to store in hand baggage. Due to their flexibility these types of travel chargers can be used at home as well as abroad so when you’re not travelling they can be used overnight charging multiple phones and tablets with only a single wall outlet.

If you travel frequently we recommend buying this type of flexible power charger online. The power charger illustrated here is the 4 Port USB Wall Charger which has been tested successfully for recharging multiple USB devices in numerous different countries. [2] [AD]

What USB charger do I need for The Isle of Man?

Why use a travel USB charger for The Isle of Man?

  • Normal travel USB chargers include 4 or more USB charger ports, this means that you now only need to bring one charger to charge multiple devices. Rather than bring 4 individual power chargers it becomes only necessary to pack one 4 port USB wall charger to power up to 4 individual devices which cuts down on the weight and size of your luggage.
  • All travel USB power chargers should include interchangeable plug heads for different power outlet types. This is ideal if travelling across different countries which will probably use a different standard to The Isle of Man.
  • Good USB travel chargers are compact, rugged and lightweight - ideal for the rigors of travel instead of than risking packing a domestic charger which could be hard to repair in The Isle of Man.
  • USB chargers will accept the 240 volt power outlets in The Isle of Man along with other voltage standards in other countries.
  • There is a possibility that accommodation or hotel rooms in The Isle of Man might only have a single wall outlet, by using a travel charger with multiple USB ports allows you to share the single wall outlet with all your devices instead of having to wait to recharge each device one by one.

  • Power outlets found in airports can be scarce and demand for charging multiple devices before a flight can be high, therefore a USB travel charger with multiple ports and the capability to fast charge is perfect.
  • The power grid in some countries can be unstable, a travel charger allows for unexpected fluctuations to prevent damage to any devices attached to it. Attempting to repair an overloaded cell phone or tablet in The Isle of Man might prove problematic and expensive.
  • More expensive USB travel chargers will also include a power outlet strip to allow you to use low powered devices such as laptops, however these will be unsuitable for high powered domestic such as hair dryers or clothes irons. Please refer to our section on using travel appliances with a Manx power outlet for helpful guidelines and advice on the most suitable power adapter for a Manx power outlet for high wattage appliances.
  • Some mobile phones could pull more than the standard 500 mA produced from a normal 5 volt USB adapter to charge or provide fast charge. Ensure that the USB power adapter can support fast charging should any of your devices need extra power.
  • Travel USB chargers can also be useful back at home by charging multiple mobile phones every night using only a single power outlet. [2] [AD]

What is a power converter?

Power converters enable you to use a 100, 110 or 120 volt electrical appliance with a 240 volt Manx power outlet.

Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.

What is the difference between a power converter and a power adapter for The Isle of Man?

A lightweight, cheap and small power adapter (or plug adapter) changes the shape of the plug on your appliance to fit into a power outlet found in The Isle of Man, but a more expensive and heavier power converter transforms a 240 volt Manx power outlet to work with a non-240 volt device. [15] [AD]

Do I need a power converter for The Isle of Man?

When you are travelling to The Isle of Man from another region please ensure that the device will accept a 240 volt power supply.

  • A step down power converter is needed if you are travelling to The Isle of Man from a country that uses 100-120 volts and your device or appliance isn't compatible with 240 volts. Read our WikiConnections list of world power outlets guide to discover which voltage your country uses.
  • You don't need a power converter if you already use either a 240 volt single voltage appliance or one that is dual voltage.
  • Electrical devices designed to work with a lower voltage such as 120 volts and then used with 240 volts run the risk of blowing a fuse, damage to your device or even an electrical fire hazard unless you use a step down power converter.
  • You shouldn't need a power converter if you wish to charge a smaller electrical device such as a laptop as these are typically support dual voltage and designed for international use, however please always check the device for dual voltage support prior to your journey.
  • If supplying power to appliances which draw more power or generate heat (such as clothes irons or hair straighteners) then you will need to use a more expensive higher wattage heavy duty power converter which allows the appliance to be used with a 240 volt Manx power outlet.
  • Buying a smaller robust dual voltage travel appliance could be more practical and cost effective than bringing a much heavier power converter just to use your existing domestic appliance.
  • Read these comprehensive travel guides on how to use curling wands, clothes irons, hairdryers and flat irons with a Manx power outlet , along with advice on affordable dual voltage alternatives.  [6] [15] [AD]

  3. Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage to the 110-120 volt range.
  4. Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 110-120 volt appliance can now be used with a 240 volt Manx power outlet. [15] [AD]
What is the difference between a power transformer and a power converter?

Voltage converter

What is the difference between a power transformer and a power converter?

Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:

  • Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
  • Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
  • Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
  • Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
  • Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
  • Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
  • Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.
Is my device single voltage or dual voltage?

Single voltage hair dryer

Is my device single voltage or dual voltage?

A simple method to see if a appliance is dual voltage or single voltage is to check for a sticker on the power plug or on the device itself, normally on the rear of the device or near to where the power cord sits. The location will vary depending on the make or model of your appliance, it should also be written in the instruction manual or on the box.

  • Single voltage devices could have a specific number - such as 240V.
  • Single voltage devices could also say a small voltage range (around 20 volts) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 100-120V.
  • Dual voltage devices will say a large range separated with a slash - such as 100/240V.

  • A basic power adapter which powers only one single device from a Manx power outlet (provided that it is dual voltage or is compatible with 240 volts), however paying a little more allows you to charge more than one device at once and be able to bring them to various different countries.

How long does it take to get to The Isle of Man?

  • For extended journeys it's worth thinking about bringing a convenient charger which is perfect for airports that works in different power outlet types, one which is light enough to pack in hand luggage and can charge phones and tablets right before an extensive trip.
  • As not all airports have power outlets please think about packing a battery portable charger for recharging on the go. When you land you might need to rely on a cell phone to make calls, messenging, using sat nav to locate a hotel or viewing itineraries; so ensure that your phone will have enough power stored. [10] [AD]
